Is my homeschooler behind? Whether you’re a new(er) homeschool parent or a long-time homeschooler, this has likely crossed your mind.
This is a worry that can creep in during conversations with other parents, after a tough homeschool day, or when learning about your provincial or state education learning outcomes. It’s a concern when a parent pulls their child from school for the first time. And it’s a concern when a parent notices when one of their kids is learning more quickly than another.
But worry no more, let’s take a closer look at what “being behind” actually means and whether it should even be a concern in your homeschool.
Listen to the episode to above hear my 16-year-old son’s response to that question. (And since he began traditional school at 15, he’ll tell you his experience).
Behind According to Whom?
In a traditional school system, children are expected to master certain concepts by specific grade levels. But these standards are arbitrary and don’t account for individual learning styles, interests, or strengths. The reality is that every child learns at a different pace, and the beauty of homeschooling is that you can tailor an education to fit your child’s unique needs—not a standardized timeline.
Learning is not a race to age 18– a real education happens when we lean into the process, not just the outcome.
The Illusion of Falling Behind
Ask yourself: behind compared to what? A system designed for mass education? Your neighbor’s child? Your own expectations?
The truth is, learning is not a race to the 18 year finish line. In homeschooling, kids have the opportunity to go deeper into subjects that fascinate them while taking extra time in areas where they need more support. They also have the opportunity to go deeper into subjects that fascinate you (kids always love spending time with parents fully engaged with life). When we know we’re not in a rush, we develop a love of learning, rather than rushing through a subject just to “keep up.”
The pressure to match an arbitrary timeline can do more harm than good, making kids feel inadequate rather than empowered.
Real Growth Happens Far Beyond Academics
When we focus too much on whether our child is “on track” academically, we can overlook the many ways they are growing in other important areas. Are they:
- Developing curiosity and problem-solving skills?
- Learning how to research and think critically?
- Building emotional intelligence and resilience?
- Gaining independence and responsibility for their learning?
These skills will serve them far better in life than simply checking off a list of academic milestones at a prescribed pace.
And the beautiful thing about homeschooling is that you’re especially dialled in to each of your kids—who are they, what are their strengths, and are you engaging their educational on each of their timelines?

How to Shift Your Mindset
If you find yourself worried about your homeschooler being behind, try discussing these three discussion points in your parent-teacher interview:
1. Every child has strengths and struggles. Your homeschool allows them to progress at a pace that suits them.
2. Look at the bigger picture: What really matters in your child’s education? When you focus on their overall growth, you can ease the pressure of grade-level comparisons.
3. Homeschooling is a long game. Short-term struggles do not define your child’s success. (I know it sometimes feels like it can, but I’ve seen it time and again, in my life and others, their struggles don’t define their success).
4. Measure progress differently: Instead of focusing on where they “should” be, celebrate how far they’ve come.

Final Thoughts
The idea of being behind is often rooted in comparison, but homeschooling is not about keeping up—it’s about learning in a way that fits your child.
When you shift your focus from fear to confidence, you can create a homeschool experience that nurtures growth, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
So take a deep breath and know that your homeschooler is exactly where they need to be.
And for those who need to hear it, but don’t have anyone to tell them… Your child is not behind—they’re on their own unique journey. The fact that you’re concerned about their progress shows what a dedicated parent you are. Trust your instincts, celebrate their individual path, and remember that the most important milestones aren’t found on any standardized chart. You’re doing better than you think, and so is your child.
